Why this event ?

This event has no precedent. The Community of Communes Around Anduze and the Tourist Office felt it was a way to pay homage to the traditional craft of our beautiful corner of France…
Pottery is a very ancient tradition in the Anduze area, dating has proved that it has been in existence here since the 5th Century. The clay used is local, in particular from Tornac (whose name could come from ‘Tourneur’ – thrower). Originally the pottery was produced in numerous small workshops which made rustic pots for everyday use ; plates, dishes and little jugs with handles called ‘toupins’. They were cheap pots that could be easily replaced, lots of shards of these pots can be found in the ground.
Then around 1610 an inspiration of Italian origin changed everything : turning large pots in the Médicis style, a Cévenol artisan started a trend which developed to become the traditional Anduze vase, with its garlands and medallions and its flame glaze of honey, olive green and chestnut brown tints. The Anduze vase is known throughout the world.
The town of Anduze and the surrounding villages, where several workshops still perpetuate the traditions of the Anduze vase, have also developed other styles of pottery and ceramics.
Throughout the year, from July 2010 to August 2011, the craftsmen will demonstrate their knowhow and techniques. They will be joined by shopkeepers, associations and schools for the various events. All participants will be encouraged and supported by their local politicians and communities.
